Leighton Grange IVC Recycling Facility

Sutcliffe provided technical due diligence services on the construction of a new state-of-the-art In-Vessel Composting (IVC) facility.

The facility was built to treat food and biodegradable waste for Cheshire East Council. We undertook detailed technical reviews of the proposed engineering solutions and undertook monthly site visits during the building programme. Cutting-edge technology from Europe was installed in order to provide airflow from underneath the slab directly into the waste to aid the composting process and improve efficiency.

The temperate gradient experienced by the concrete during this process was a key design consideration, along with appropriate corrosion protection to the steel frame in ongoing humid conditions.

The site operator, Biowise is a leading waste management and recycling company with over 50 years of experience. The company promotes the use of innovative and sustainable waste treatment methods to help achieve zero waste in landfills. The new facility can treat up to 75,000 tonnes per annum of food and garden waste.

Over 95% of the waste inputs will be recycled into quality BSI PAS 100 certified compost for use in horticultural, agricultural and landscaping markets. The facility is helping Cheshire East achieve its overall 65% recycling target for waste which is a huge step forward for the UK’s sustainability commitments.
